Okinawa, Japan - The U.S. military’s presence on Okinawa began at the end of World War II. With multiple bases and all service branches represented, the island's strategic location comes into play during contingencies and exercises. The kokeshi doll is a limbless wooden doll with a long history in Japan dating back to the early 19th century, when it is believed they were used as toys and gifts representing the wish for a healthy child. Today, they are sold throughout the island as mementos, gifts and good luck charms. Our Okinawa charm is a .925 sterling silver, 3-dimensional kokeshi doll inscribed with “Okinawa” on the back.
